A hidden gem of medieval Germany


Aachen, the westernmost city in Germany, is a charming university town rich in history and culture. With a population of about 250,000, it seamlessly blends Roman, medieval, and contemporary designs.

Notably, the city was once home to the Frankish emperor Charlemagne. Today, Aachen offers fresh cafes, unique shops, and a variety of dining options, all bustling with local life and minimal tourism.

Famous as a spa resort, it boasts attractions like the Carolus Thermal Spa. The historic old town is filled with heritage buildings, including a UNESCO World Heritage site. Beyond the city, lush farmland and wooded paths await exploration. On sunny days, the city comes alive with bustling terraces, markets, and quaint streets perfect for wandering.

Getting there:

  • From Cologne:

Getting to Aachen from Cologne is a quick 35 minute train ride with tickets available on the Deutsche Bahn site. 

  • From Brussels:

Getting to Aachen from Brussels the bus or the train is available. Flixbus offers good service and takes about 2-3 hours to get there. Otherwise train tickets can be found here and the journey takes around 1-2 hours.

What to Do:

Visit Aachen Cathedral

At the heart of the city lies Aachen Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978. Its interior showcases stunning Byzantine designs, featuring intricate bronze and silver inlays, making it a unique experience compared to typical cathedral visits.

Explore the Rathaus (City Hall)

Just around the corner from Aachen Cathedral stands the impressive City Hall, showcasing Gothic architecture with a spacious square in front. Inside, visitors can explore art collections and historical artifacts. The surrounding area is lined with delightful cafes, bars, and shops.

Relax in the Elisengarten

A short distance from the historic center, Elisengarten offers a green oasis perfect for a picnic or leisurely stroll. On sunny days, it’s an ideal spot for people-watching and exploring accessible Roman ruins.

Stroll through the Lousberg Forest

For nature enthusiasts, the Lousberg Forest provides a serene retreat with scenic farm-field views. Visiting during the late afternoon offers the opportunity to catch the fading sunlight and enjoy panoramic views of the city from Lousbergblick.

Café Hopping in Downtown Aachen

The vibrant student population contributes to an excellent café scene. Here are a few favorites:

  • Baristinho: A trendy spot offering great brunch options with indoor and outdoor seating, also suitable for working or studying.
  • Franky’s Farm Café: Located on the opposite side of the historic area, this small café offers excellent coffees and delectable cookies. 
  • Didi’s Chocolate & Coffee: Centrally located, Didi’s is perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up, combining people-watching with tasty sweet treats.

Final notes:

Aachen is a rich and vibrant town that makes for a great day trip. It is full of history, nature and a charming feel that is sure to welcome you in. As I made it my home for the better part of the month, I came to love the quaint slower pace. It is the perfect day trip to see a quieter side of German life.
